I’ve had several AirPod cases over the years, mostly with the intention of attaching them to a keyring so that I don’t lose them. I have found that rubber and silicone ones do not last long; they stretch out, and the AirPods fall out, or even the whole case slips out. Or the lid of the case will slowly stretch and come off and get lost, even if it comes with a bit of double-sided tape. I do not like rubber cases for AirPods.
After realising that rubber and silicone AirPod cases are trash, I discovered that lockable ones are available. These cases are, of course, locking with a clip or clasp mechanism, not a key. I’ve then owned a few with different locking mechanisms over the years, but found that the springs or clasps involved would eventually wear out and break.
My main concern is having the case open by accident and having the AirPods fall out. So, when I went to replace my most recent mechanical case, I thought I’d give this product a go, which uses additional magnets to hold the case closed.

Now, with third-party Apple cases on Amazon, there are always new models coming and going, but here’s why I selected this particular model:
It was available in a range of colours. I got the titanium colour. I wanted to get something other than my usual matte black, without being too colourful, so this looks rather elegant, yet subtle. I’ve been using this for over 3 months now, and overall, it’s the best AirPod case I’ve owned.
Whilst it is not waterproof, it is very durable and has not opened accidentally a single time. Being on a string and clipped to my belt loop, I hardly even dropped it, though I prefer a shorter string and carabiner. But that’s easily changed.
